Our existence is governed by the principle of learning and this principle is established on the foundation of continuity by way of questioning the status quo in creating the future, looking at all of these through the lens of progress and not casting the achievement made on the altar of perfection.
In the last century and up until in the recent past, the acquisition of knowledge through learning has been through a structure called school.
A closer look at the etymology of the word school reveals the following;
"place of instruction," Old English scol, from Latin schola "intermission of work, leisure for learning; learned conversation, debate; lecture; meeting place for teachers and students, place of instruction; disciples of a teacher, body of followers, sect," from Greek skhole "spare time, leisure, rest, ease; idleness; that in which leisure is employed; learned discussion;" also "a place for lectures, school;" originally "a holding back, a keeping clear," from skhein "to get" (from PIE root *segh- "to hold") + -ole by analogy with bole "a throw," stole "outfit," etc. https://www.etymonline.com/word/school
The above definition (explanation) has guided how information, by way of learning has been packaged and ‘sold’ by way of schooling structure which has been arranged in a grading formats in classifying the information into clusters and complexity of assimilation. So those in pursuit of learning are awarded paper certificates in recognition of their assimilation and show of usage in what they have supposedly acquired in School.
The growth of technology and her disciples have come to bring a complete change to the above narrative in learning and acquisition of knowledge.
The virtual way of life and living, has greatly redefined how we learn and assess our level of assimilation.
The focus here now is in value creation based on one’s cognitive skills with a show of knowledge and know-how and not just a piece of paper called a certificate.
Your certification now is more on ‘show me’ what you can do with your mind, harnessing the power of your creative reasoning and coming up with solutions to problems.
In this episode of the Word Café, our focus is on the university education and the future of schooling in the face of the changing landscape of learning.
