The big question is not whether training is good (it is) but whether the training is aimed at the future or just aimed at spending a budget.

Africa’s energy industry is in a real transition. Experienced professionals are retiring, international energy companies are shifting assets, and indigenous and independent operators are stepping up across upstream, midstream, and downstream. That creates opportunity, but it also exposes skills gaps. We talk about what capabilities should be prioritized now, from technical foundations like petroleum economics and geoscience to the support functions that increasingly shape performance, including commercial law, ethics, HR systems, and the practical discipline of how work gets done on the ground.

We also dig into what schools cannot fully teach: the ideal versus the real. On-the-job training, structured mentorship, and training departments that actually understand operations are how graduates learn to apply data, work safely, and deliver results in a fast-moving environment. Then we widen the lens to collaboration between government and industry and why the AI revolution belongs inside modern energy training, not outside it. We close with a story about “looking with the eyes of experience” and why seasoned trainers can compress years of learning into months.
