S4 270 Ep. From Ancient Sparks To Global Power: The Human Story Of Electricity

A sleepless night in the 90s, a BBC documentary, and a mural that wouldn’t let go—this is the spark that powers today’s conversation. We follow that current from a teenager’s curiosity to a sweeping look at how electricity rewired human history, culture, and ambition. Guided by Raoul Dufy’s vast tableau of monuments and machinery, we decode the symbols of progress and the people who carried the charge.

We revisit the origins: Thales and the first static experiments, Gilbert’s careful notes, Franklin’s bold tests, Faraday’s fields, and the equations that gave shape to the unseen. The plot intensifies with Edison and Tesla, the current war that defined long-distance power, and Westinghouse’s bet that made AC the backbone of modern grids. Along the way, we shine a light on Lewis Latimer, whose filament work helped turn a fragile invention into everyday brilliance. This isn’t hero worship; it’s a reminder that real breakthroughs demand teamwork, credit, and grit.

Then we turn the lens to the present and near future. What does “the spirit of electricity” look like when it’s your neighborhood, your workshop, your city’s horizon? We talk Nigeria’s energy reality: intermittent supply, inventive workarounds, and the promise of mini-grids, smart meters, and renewables. We explore how reliable power drives health, education, and jobs, and why policy and public trust matter as much as turbines and transformers. The challenge ahead isn’t just technical—it’s cultural. Can we treat the grid as a shared craft, plan beyond election cycles, and train the talent that keeps the lights honest?

If you felt that first jolt of wonder from a flicker, a lab demo, or a skyline at night, this conversation is your voltage check. Tap play, see the mural through fresh eyes, and help sketch the next chapter of power: resilient, fair, and built to last. If this resonates, subscribe, share it with someone who loves a good origin story, and leave a review so others can find the spark too.

SPEAKER_00: Hi. Good morning. Good afternoon. Good evening. Good everything. Wherever you are on the surface of the earth at this very instant, listening to me and seeing me. How are you doing? I have to ask that question. You know. Part of the reason, if not all, why we are here is because you are there. And listening to me. I'm fine. How are you? I'm good. I'm pretty good. I feel like I'm sitting on a movie set. Yes, today I've decided to bring you into another frame, another space, uh just to show you what we do. Super excited. Welcome to the World Cafe Live Show. You know how we say it on the show? This is the space where we come into lean on one another's experience to forge a positive path. Wheel what are we going to be doing today? I'm super excited because what I'm about to share with you has been with me for over three decades. I would say that, yes, over three decades. So what you're seeing on the screen now, the image, I will tell you. I saw, I think that was 1993, 94, when I was in, I think that was SS1, SS2, thereabout, senior secondary school. I went visiting. I went to see my uncle and uh spent some time with the kids, and uh I stayed over. I woke up in the middle of the night, that was when uh cable TV in Nigeria was uh picking up, growing. And I went to the living room, turned on the TV, and I saw this BBC documentary on the spirit of electricity. And this was the image I saw, and I couldn't sleep. I had to stay awake to listen to the uh documentary, and it talked about how electricity had grown, you know, how it has grown over the years, the influence and all of that. But what caught my attention was this image. And since then, I have been looking for this image, honestly, nowhere. So recently, upon my research, you know, part of what I do in my process to build content and discussions and all of that, this thought came back to me, and I went on the internet and I started searching, and I came upon it the spirit of electricity, an image that was uh drawn by his name is Raul Duffy. I hope I got the correct the spelling correctly, Raul Duffy or Dufay, a French artist, and the impression is amazing. So, this is how we're going to do the show today. Everybody who is existing today on the earth, let me let me not put a caveat to it, but truthfully speaking, has in one way or the other come under the influence of electricity. Practically, the earth, you've heard me say that before, runs on an energy profile. And I feel and I think this energy profile expresses in seven different dimensions, and one of it is electricity. Now, electricity is something that if somebody tells you to define it, the best you can say is light. Light. You remember that word in Genesis? Yes, when the Spirit of the Lord hovered over the surface of the deep, and God said, Let there be light, and there was light. Now, from studies, it's been proven that the universe, as we speak, is still expanding. And I think it's expanding because of the word of God that had gone forth, spoken. Why am I saying all of this? It is because of how electricity had grown. So I went to make some inquiries and research just to see where it all started from. Surprisingly, from the sixth century, yes, before Christ, a Greek philosopher by the name uh Milutus, Tails of Milutus. I beg your pardon. His name is Tails of Milutus. That's how I saw it. I think the right word is Milutus. Tails Militus. He started experimenting with electricity, and somehow he came up with the name, you know, electricity, from the Greek word. What he was doing was rubbing two surfaces together, and it was creating some static electricity, you know. You know that thing when you stand up from your bed or you're taking off your nylon shirt over your head. You hear those sound, crispy sounds, and all of that. That was where it all began. Then it moved to the 16th century where you had William Gilbert. Yeah. Experimented. It traveled to the 17th century, Benjamin Franklin. Yeah, that Benjamin Franklin, the one you see on the dollar bill, yep, experimented on it. And it traveled and got to the point of Nikola Fessler, Thomas Edison, the alternate current and DC current as we know it, the current war, where uh George Westernhouse came into play and all of that. And today, practically everything on the surface of the earth, technology is driven as a result of this discovery. Now, let me take you through this. Looking at the image, when I saw it, what fascinated me was that image there. Yes, you can see it like a person flying, or should I would I use the word suspended through time. Now, when you look at the image, what you're going to see is practically the development of the human history. You're going to see the Eiffel Tower. You're going to see St. Peter's Square, you know, where you have the Basilica in Rome. St. Peter's Square is in Rome. Eiffel Tower is in Paris. You're going to see the White House, or sorry, the Congress, House of Congress, which is in uh Washington, D.C. When you look up there, you're going to see the China, uh, what's it called now? The tar. Yes. The wall of China. You're going to also see the Arabian, let me use the word, the Arabian Peninsula. You see the Arabian structures. When you look down, you're also going to see stuffs like candle. For your information, in getting this, I had to work with my team. So certain elements were not caught properly because the original image is presently in Paris, the museum in Paris. It's a room of its own, wall to wall, end-to-end, a massive structure. So recreating this, I must give my team thumbs up. So you now see, follow my thoughts. You see the image or the beam or the spirit moving across different timelines. Now, this is what I see when I look at this image. A word was spoken. Let there be light. Yeah, scripture records that, and there was light. But do you know what the scriptures didn't tell us explicitly the kind of light? If you understand what I mean by that. So, in my thinking, those who have yielded to the flow of the spirit according to the different timelines from the sixth century from Fields of Miletus, the Greek philosopher, up until the minds like Nikola Tesla, they yielded to the move of the spirit across different timelines. So you begin to see different developments according to the timelines. To your far left or right, as the case may be from whichever you're seeing from your screen, you can see some, I want to believe those are politicians or policy makers, royalties who are enjoying the influence of electricity as a result of individuals who have responded to the mind of the spirit according to the times. You know, when I was preparing for this, this scripture came to my mind. The Lord gave his word, and great was the company that published it. Another came to my mind, the words that I speak, they are life and they are spirit. In other words, they are not caught in a particular time. They are not like you can't capture it, keep it in one place. But as long as there is life on earth, you keep seeing that progression. The spirit keeps moving. And those who yield to, I mean, the influence of the spirit, they begin to interpret what they are seeing. Like you can see here now, what they are seeing according to the different timelines. Now, come to think of it. What was it like when they were using lanterns? It was still electricity, a kind of electricity. What was it like when they started moving from lanterns to kerosene lights? What was it like when they moved? Discovering that the thunder, as in the lightning we see up there, can be converted into energy. That was Faraday, Michael Faraday walking on it. What was it like when they now discovered electromagnetism? What was it like when somebody like yes, Thomas Edison? Do you know that when Thomas Edison was working on electricity and all of that, the light bulb? I have to put in this there was a black man. His name was Latima. He worked on the filament. Yes, I need to tell you that because the story of electricity is not complete if you don't mention the black race. Ah, yes, I will say that. Boosting right. So he was part of the team that discovered uh the light bulb, you know, the filament and all of that. Latima, you can check on him. Then came on the scene somebody like Nicola Tesla. Tesla was the man that challenged electricity to the highest. Because when it came on, Thomas Edison talked about direct contact uh current, DC current. It can't flow more than a hundred meters thereabout. But when Nikola Tesla came on the scene, he said, No, I have interacted with the spirit of electricity. And this is what the spirit of electricity has told me. He had opened unto me that electricity can travel long distances that is using the alternate current principle, the AC. So after he said that, it became a battle between Nicola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Then just Judge Westonhouse came into it to sponsor Nikola Tesla's thought. And that's why we're here today. You can see everything. You're seeing me now because of the spirit of electricity. You're hearing me now because of the spirit of electricity. But now, we're here now at this precipice. By the way, you like the image you're seeing, don't you? I do, because it's fascinating. I wish the camera can give us that bird's eye view. Each time I remember when I saw it, it's like, okay, a cloud moving. Hold that thought. I'm coming back to it. A cloud moving. And at every movement of the cloud, there are changes happening. Phenomenal, significant changes. And the earth is responding to those changes. The earth is responding to the development of those changes. So you come to see that electricity is for us. SPEAKER_01: That I ask myself now where we are today, what are we going to do with the development that is given to us? Yes. The development that is given to us by our fathers. What are we going to do? SPEAKER_00: How are we going to play with this now? How are we going to manage it now? How are we going to make the best of it now? SPEAKER_01: Is this the end? SPEAKER_00: Is this the end of electricity? Is this the end of development? Is this the end of who we are? You know, when I was preparing uh for this episode, I looked at my country. I will always bring it to Nigeria. Yes, you know I will always bring it there. I look at my country and what we are experiencing, the spiritual electricity that we are experiencing in our country, looking at the different individuals, people that are interacting with this power, with this energy, with this, would I use the word blessing? And what is happening in our country, the shifts, the changes, the development. And now ask myself, what does the future hold? Yeah. What does the future hold? Just like we see the spirit of electricity moving across different timelines, and each movement brings about this phenomenal change. Phenomenal. Industrial revolution, entrepreneur spirit, craftsmanship, they all stem from the move of the spirit. Yeah. I think Raul Dufi, in trying to humanize his understanding, the concept, he drew this. That is far beyond this. Because he said, let there be light. And light, let me put it in the actual word, light bead. Yes. Now, the question, like I said, what form of light? The light is still moving. That there's a progression to the light. There's a progression. So it is for us now to take hold of this light in our generation to make the best of it, to shape shift our lives, shape shift our culture, shape shift our society. SPEAKER_01: You know that ignorance is not an excuse. SPEAKER_00: One being ignorant of what is available to him is not an excuse. But this is what happens when you're ignorant as to what is or what should you work with. SPEAKER_01: You suffer. That's it. You suffer for nothing. You suffer. SPEAKER_00: Pain, you suffer the consequences of ignorance. You suffer the consequences of, should I say, not acting on what you should act. I mean, that's why we're here on the World Cafe Podcast. We always come to give you certain thoughts that will jolt you, certain uh conversations that will keep you awake, that will make you ask those questions. So, what will it be? What will it be 10 years from today seeing this image? What will it be 20 years from today? Politically speaking, seeing this image, the spirit of electricity hovering over your city, what will it look like economically? What would it look like industrially? What would it look like? Just ask yourself that question. What would it look like? Well, for me, I know what it's going to look like. Beautiful things, amazing things, changes that will uh define our world and our time. All right. What did I come to do? This is what I came to do, just to share with you this image and the story behind the image. And when I when when I when I was preparing for this, I showed it to my wife and uh she screamed. When I showed it to my producer and director, he was like, you don't need expla I need you don't need to explain, no explanation needed. The image speaks for itself. SPEAKER_01: I'm excited about it. Yes, I am. SPEAKER_00: Because I know what we can achieve, potentially speaking, what we can achieve. And that's why we are here. That's why the word cafe is here. All right, guys. You know how we do it on the show. Uh we just come to share moments like this. We come to speak, we come to drop, we come to provoke, we come to what I use the word excite you. Are you excited? I am. SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm. SPEAKER_00: I am. But I have to go now. You know how we say it. This is the space where we come in to lean on one and other's experience to forge a positive path. Well, don't go. We are available on all our social media uh platforms. On Instagram, X, LinkedIn, yes, even on TikTok. We have a YouTube channel. Have you subscribed? Go ahead and subscribe. Hit that notification button so that when uh juicy episodes like this drop, you'll be the first to catch it. Okay then, till I come your way again, I need to run. So I go look for something to research upon, to create, and bring to you. But you know what? Till I come your way again. SPEAKER_01: My name is Amakri. Amakri Subway. Aye for now.
